Enrolling for Coverage
What to Know
Exelixis is always proud to offer a great mix of benefits to support your physical, emotional, and financial well-being. Here’s everything you need to know to take full advantage of them.
Open Enrollment is November 4-November 20, 2024.
Want to keep the same benefits in 2025? You don’t have to take any action, with one exception: You must re-enroll in FSAs every year. If you have an FSA right now, you WILL NOT be automatically reenrolled for 2025. You must actively enroll in your FSAs again.
What’s New for 2025
You bring your best to work every day—your passion, creativity, and commitment—to help drive our collective success. To support you, Exelixis brings our best—wide-ranging, easy-to-access benefits that empower you to thrive in all aspects of your life.
Here are highlights of what’s coming in 2025:
- Blue Shield of CA is updating its pharmacy program to make access to prescription drug benefits easier, more affordable, and transparent for members.
- Amazon Pharmacy home delivery will replace CVS Caremark Mail Service Pharmacy. Members currently receiving prescriptions via mail order will receive information from Blue Shield on how to seamlessly transfer this service to Amazon Pharmacy.
- New ID cards with updated pharmacy information will be mailed to members. Members will also be able to access updated ID cards through their online myblueshield account and via the Blue Shield mobile app.
- Members will be able to take advantage of new digital enhancements designed to help compare costs, find low-cost drugs, monitor expenses, and more.
- We’re enhancing the Blue Shield HDHP with Health Savings Account (HSA) medical plan option.
- Starting in 2025, Exelixis will make our entire annual contribution to your HSA available in January.
- For 2025 only, we’re increasing our annual HSA contribution to $1,650 (employee-only coverage) or $3,300 (employee-plus-dependents coverage). This year, Exelixis’s HSA contribution will cover your entire deductible for the HDHP medical plan.
- For employees who were grandfathered into the Blue Shield PPO plan: the PPO plan will no longer be available in 2026. Enroll in the HDHP with HSA in 2025 and start taking advantage of this unique plan. To learn more, attend a targeted information session on November 4, 11 a.m.–12 p.m. PT.
- We’re expanding Progyny benefits to include menopause care.
- Employee contributions (see Your Contributions Costs below)
- Plans with premiums that are increasing: Blue Shield PPO and Kaiser HMO.
- Plans with premiums that are staying the same: Blue Shield HDHP with HSA, Blue Shield EPO, dental, vision, MetLife Legal, and all voluntary employee-paid plans.
- We’re adding a Southern CA Kaiser HMO Plan.
- The plan design will stay the same. Current Kaiser HMO members in Southern California will get a new Member ID Card.
- The eligible items for the Forma Wellness Subsidy will be changing. 2025 Forma Exelixis Wellness Program Policy
- IRS limits for some plans are changing for 2025.
- The Commuter limit for 2025 will be $325.
- Health Savings Account (HSA) for 2025 only (see chart)
Reminder: If you enroll in the HDHP with Health Savings Account (HSA) plan, Exelixis contributes to your HSA every calendar year. Starting in 2025, you’ll be able to access the full contribution in January! Also, Exelixis is temporarily increasing our contribution in 2025 to $1,650 for employee-only coverage or $3,300 for employee-plus-dependents coverage. This means you can start the year off right by meeting your entire plan deductible!
To help you decide if the HDHP with HSA plan is right for you, attend the Blue Shield Education Session on Monday, November 4, from 11 a.m.–12 p.m. PT.
HSA Eligibility
There are legal requirements that restrict who’s eligible to enroll in a Health Savings Account and how eligible expenses are defined.
- You can’t be enrolled in another medical plan that covers costs before you meet our plan’s deductible.
- Neither you nor your spouse can be enrolled in a Health Care Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA) in the same year. You can, however, be enrolled in an HSA and a Limited Purpose FSA, which is only for dental and vision expenses, simultaneously.
- You can’t also receive health benefits through Medicare, TRICARE, or Veterans Affairs.
- You can’t be claimed as a dependent by someone else.
- You can’t use your HSA to cover expenses for your domestic partner.
What You Need To Do
Open Enrollment
We continue to expand and enhance our benefit offerings to ensure that they meet your needs at all stages of your career and life, and they’re competitive with those offered by similar companies in our industry. Open Enrollment is your chance to explore your coverage options and make sure you’re maximizing the tools and resources available to you.
Here are the steps to take between November 4 and November 20:
- Take some time to see all the benefits that are new and changing for 2025.
- Attend the Open Enrollment events detailed below.
- Once you’re ready to enroll, log on to Workday.
Open Enrollment Reminders
- If you want to contribute to an FSA in 2025, you must actively re-enroll during Open Enrollment. If you have an FSA right now, you WILL NOT be automatically reenrolled for 2025.
- If you enroll in the HDHP with HSA plan, Exelixis contributes to your HSA every calendar year. Starting in 2025, you’ll be able to access the entire annual contribution in January!
- Also, in 2025 only, we’re increasing our contribution to $1,650 for employee-only coverage or $3,300 for employee-plus-dependents coverage. This means you can meet your entire plan deductible and start the year off right!
- For the 2025 plan year, Exelixis is increasing our contribution to employees’ HSAs to align with the deductible. Because of this increase, employees who elected to take advantage of the IRS maximum (or close to it) in the 2024 plan year will need to take action in Workday to lower their annual contribution goal for the 2025 plan year. This is because your 2024 annual contribution goal will roll over into your 2025 Open Enrollment Benefit Event and cause an error due to the increased employer contribution (resulting in you going over the 2025 IRS limit).
- Outside of Open Enrollment, you can make benefit changes only if you experience a qualified change in status, like marriage, divorce, or the birth or adoption of a child.
- All changes you make during Open Enrollment will take effect January 1, 2025.

(CA only)
New Hires
You have 30 days to enroll starting on the date you were hired. Benefits are effective on your hire date, except for HSAs and MetLife legal plans, which go into effect on the first day of the month following your hire date. Once you’ve reviewed the information on this site about your benefits and made your decisions, you can enroll using Workday.
Note about your benefits for 2024 and 2025:
- You have 30 days to enroll in benefits that will be effective through the end of 2024.
- Once your New Hire Benefit Event is completed, the Open Enrollment Benefit Event will appear, and you can make your benefit elections for the 2025 Plan Year.
You have two weeks to complete the Open Enrollment Benefit Event for benefits effective January 1, 2025. If you don’t enroll within this period, you won’t have another chance to enroll until Open Enrollment in the fall of 2025 for benefits effective January 1, 2026, unless you have a qualified change in status.
Eligibility
You and your dependents are eligible for health benefits if you work at least 30 hours per week.
Your eligible dependents include:
- Your legal spouse
- Your qualified domestic partner
- Your children up to age 26, including your natural or adopted children, your stepchildren, and your qualified domestic partner’s children
- Mentally or physically disabled children of any age, as long as they became disabled before age 19
Enrolling Your Domestic Partner
You may enroll your qualified domestic partner in medical, dental, vision, voluntary life, and voluntary AD&D coverage.
Your partner may qualify as a domestic partner if:
- Neither you nor your partner is married or legally separated from any other person
- You and your partner are each other’s sole domestic partner and intend to remain so indefinitely
Domestic partners can qualify for benefits coverage in one of two ways:
- Register your domestic partnership as required by your state. You must also complete the Affirmation of the Existence of Registered Domestic Partnership section of the Affidavit of Domestic Partnership form.
- Apply as non-registered partners. This is for individuals who choose not to register or who are not eligible to register their domestic partnership with their state. You must submit an Affidavit of Domestic Partnership form to the Human Resources department during enrollment.
Note: Domestic partners are not currently recognized as IRS dependents; therefore, the portion of premiums your employer pays on behalf of your domestic partner must be taxed. This is called imputed income. Also, any premiums you pay that are attributable to the domestic partner coverage must be taxed. These premiums are deducted on a post-tax basis versus pretax. Please review the Domestic Partner Policy for more information. You can read more about the Exelixis Domestic Partner Policy and find forms.
Making Changes During the Year
Due to IRS regulations, once you’ve made your elections for the plan year, you cannot change your benefits until the next Open Enrollment period. The only exception is if you have a qualified change in status. Your status change will determine the benefit election changes you can make, when those changes take effect, and the deadline for applying to make the changes.
Examples of qualified status changes include:
- Marriage, legal separation, or divorce
- Birth or adoption of a child
- Change in employment status for you or your spouse that results in gaining or losing coverage
- Change in a dependent’s benefits eligibility status (e.g., a dependent child exceeds the maximum age for coverage)
- Loss of a dependent (death)
If you have a qualified change in status and wish to change your benefits, you must request the change by logging in to your Workday account or by contacting the Benefits Team within 30 days of the life-event change. If you miss the 30-day window, you may not change your benefits until the next Open Enrollment.
