Paid Time Off
What to Know
Our work is important. And your time away from work is just as important. Exelixis gives you plenty of time to rest, recharge, recover, or ride waves. It’s for whatever makes you happy!
Vacation
The amount of vacation time you accrue each pay period depends on how long you’ve worked for Exelixis.
You can also save up your vacation time and carry it over to the next year. There’s a maximum amount of vacation you can save up, so make sure not to waste it!
Sick Time
We want to encourage you to take time off to tend to your own health needs or care for an immediate family member who’s ill or injured. Regular full-time employees working at least 30 hours per week receive 10 paid sick days per calendar year.
Regular part-time employees working less than 30 hours per week will accrue one hour of paid sick time for every 40 hours worked.
You won’t be paid unused sick time when you leave Exelixis nor receive cash compensation for unused sick days. Unused sick time does not roll over into the next calendar year. Any unused time will zero out and reset at 10 days on January 1 of the next calendar year.

You can add the 2024 company holidays and IT scheduled maintenance to your Outlook calendar. You’ll be asked to select what you’d like to add. Note: This is for PC users only. If you’re a Mac user, reach out to IT for help via JSM.
Floating Holidays
We understand that our employees celebrate many different holidays, as well as days of remembrance and respect. That’s why we provide one paid floating holiday per calendar year, which allows all regular employees to take time off to recognize a day of significance to them and their family.
A floating holiday must be tied to one of these specific events:
- A religious holiday (must be taken on the day of the holiday)
- A state/federal holiday not designated as a company holiday (must be taken within three days of the holiday)
- A day of cultural importance not designated as a company holiday (must be taken on the day of the holiday)
- Your birthday (must be taken within three days of your birthday)
Floating days cannot be used in place of vacation or sick days.
To use a floating holiday, you need to obtain advance approval from your manager through Workday. Your manager has the authority to deny the requested time off if it interferes with business operations and to cancel previously approved requests.
Unused floating holidays do not roll over from year to year and are forfeited as of December 31 of each calendar year. If your employment ends for any reason, you will not be paid for unused floating holidays.
Employee Volunteer Time Off
The Employee Volunteer Program (EVP) gives you the opportunity to play an active role in serving your local community by volunteering time to the organizations you care about. Through this program:
- Exelixis provides 25 hours of volunteer time off (VTO) for use toward volunteering during the work week with manager approval.
- You receive $20 in Volunteer Rewards (VR) for every hour volunteered, with a maximum of $500 per year.
- Volunteer Rewards may be donated to any eligible U.S. charitable organization.
For more information, visit the Giving and Volunteer page.

Disability Programs
Short-Term Disability (STD) Salary Continuation Program
If you’re unable to work for medical reasons related to your own health condition and you’ve completed a minimum of three months of full-time or part-time regular employment before your leave begins, you may be eligible for pay under our Short-Term Disability Salary Continuation Program.
For a short-term disability that lasts up to 90 days, you get 100% of your salary. The first seven days is a waiting period, where you can elect to use your sick hours, and then short-term disability coverage kicks in on the eighth day. Starting on the 91st day, you qualify for long-term disability and receive 60% of your salary up to $20,000 a month.
For more information on the STD Salary Continuation Program, please refer to our Leave of Absence policy.
Long-Term Disability (LTD)
Long-term disability (LTD) insurance is provided for regular employees working 30 or more hours per week.
For long-term disability, you can elect to either have your LTD benefit premiums paid by the company (also called non-contributory), in which case you’ll pay the tax on your benefit when you receive it, or pay for your LTD insurance premiums on an after-tax basis (called contributory), in which case your benefit will not be taxed, and your take-home benefit will be higher.
For more information on LTD insurance, please refer to our Leave of Absence policy.

Requesting Time Off
It’s important for you to experience breaks from work, and it’s also important that you request, accurately log, and communicate these days off so that your manager, departmental team, key cross-functional teams, and the Payroll team know your plans, and to ensure your vacation balances are correct and up to date.
Here are the steps to take to request time off:
- Email or talk to your manager ahead of time to request your days off and receive approval.
- If your department and/or cross-functional team utilizes a time-off calendar, make sure you mark your days off on the calendar(s) ahead of time.
- Log your time off in Workday ahead of the planned days off.
- Don’t forget to put your OOO message on Outlook and your phone.
- Relax and enjoy some well-deserved time off!
- If you forgot to log your time off in Workday and realize the mistake later, enter the time off in the current period. If you have any questions about how to do this, email payroll@exelixis.com.
If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to your HR Business Partner or Payroll for help.
